Walking Field Trips

What exciting adventures are available for your students to experience around your school’s neighborhood ? This December, my best friend and partner in crime, Jennifer Moody, took our classes to the local public library to see a gorgeous puppet show of the Nutcracker put on by Literature Live who is sponsored by the City of Austin Public Libraries. The presentation was a perfect way for us to kick off the holiday season and enjoy a gorgeous 20 minute walk through our community. The fieldtrip didn’t cost us a thing, thanks to the organizer of the puppet show and branch manager of Terrazas Library, Eric Travis. I hope these sweet photos will encourage you to check out your local community and see if you can arrange a walking fieldtrip for your class to a neighborhood library, park, firehouse, bakery or community center.

Here we are on our way to Terrazas Library!

At the end of a unit on beginning Spanish for kindergarteners, they celebrated with a special party. In addition to ethnic foods, they watched the Spanish language version of Toy Story. About 30 seconds into the film, one of the students jumped up and shouted “Miss Love, Woody speaks Spanish, too!”

Hey Jennifer - We met in Washington DC at the Time Warner teacher of the year ceremonies. You wrote me a wonderful note over a year ago and I've been meaning to track you down ever since then. I just wanted to say Happy Holidays to you and your family and tell you that I'll take you up on your offer for dinner, dancing and music on one of my visits home to Austin with my wife and kids. I'm thinking Magnolia Cafe for food, Broken Spoke for dancing and Cedar Street on 4th for the late night music!
Drop me a call or email sometime soon - my cell is 404 307-2316.
Happy New Years -
Douglas

Hi Douglas!

What a fun place to hear from you! Grant and I would absolutely love to see you again and meet you family. The evening of events you suggested sound just great to me- Austin is such an easy place to have fun! I don't know if you will be at the TWC event again this spring, but I am applying with a wonderful project I have been working on with my students for much of the year and I always like to hope for the best. I will keep you posted on the results. D.C. was such a magical trip for us both, I am looking forward to returning if that is how it is written in the stars!

Best Wishes To You and Yours for the New Year!
Jennifer
