I Scream, You Scream, We All Scream for Ice Cream

Ice_cream_a This week we were studying solids, liquids, and gases within our unit on Ice Cream.  What better way to see a liquid change forms to a solid than by using their own hands?  It was a "cool" activity that the kids loved!Ice_cream_2

Ice_cream_3 We began by reading the story "Ice Cream" from Frog and Toad All Year.  The students then created their own ice cream monsters out of circles and triangles glued on construction paper.  They wrote 5 sentences about their monster on bright colored ice cream cones.  They included where it lived, what it was made out of, what its name was, and what it looked like.  Next we discussed what were solids, liquids, and gases.  We then made a liquid mixture of milk, sugar, and vanilla.  We had to use the correct measurements of each ingredient (the students did this of course).  I poured 1/2 cup of the mixture into quart-size ziploc bags.  We then had to go outside (it is a messy activity).  The students got with their partner.  Each team was given a gallon-size ziploc bag filled 1/2 way with ice and rock salt.  The team had to take turns working the bag.  They kept it in constant motion.  You can see in the pictures they did bring their gloves/mittens to school to use.  After about 10 minutes, we removed the bags and wiped them down (you don't want salty ice cream).  The kids were amazed that their liquid had become a yummy solid.  Needless to say, we had to enjoy our science experiment.  To wrap it all up, the students wrote about how they made a liquid change to a solid and they illustrated it.  In the words of one of my first graders, he became a "magician" that day!
