Learn from Your Fears

Good reporters sometimes come in small packages.

John barnes interview Standing next to adult reporters with all their high tech imaging and voice recording equipment sometimes made me feel like my digital camera and voice recorder just weren't up to the job. I soon learned, as a Scholastic Kid Reporter, that when you get nervous, stay focused on your mission: a good story!

It always helps me to take a couple of deep breathes and focus my mind before I cover a story. Being a kid reporter can be a very challenging job. I also found that asking for advice from those sometimes intimidating adult reporters can be very helpful.

I have learned a lot! Mostly that a good story is not about fancy equipment. I have learned to be a better speaker, interviewer, and writer. I learned that I'll run into trouble, but that the editors at Scholastic will always help me out.

I have had some really exciting and challenging assignments. I've interviewed a teen-aged inventor, met an all girl band of pre-teens, spoken to construction workers about the economy, and even heard President Barack Obama speak!

The Scholastic Kids Press Corps is now taking applications for the 2010-2011 school year. If you're interested in signing up, check out the entry process by clicking HERE!
