We are now accepting applications for the 2011-2012 Scholastic News Kids Press Corps!

To apply, applicants must complete and mail ALL of the following:

* a typed news article (maximum 400 words) about your community. The article must include at least two quotes from at least one interview.

* a typed essay (maximum 250 words) that answers the questions: Why do you want to be a Kid Reporter? What do you hope to learn as a Kid Reporter?

* two ideas for stories about people making a difference in your community that you would like to work on as a Kid Reporter.

* a basic background information form that lets Scholastic News Kids Press Corps editors know more about you and help us select a diverse group of kids from all over the country.

* a Student Release Form (form provided by Scholastic must be completed and signed by your parent/legal guardian).

* a recent photograph of yourself that, if you are selected as a Kid Reporter, will appear on the site when we announce the new Kid Reporters (this can be a color printout or an actual photograph, but we cannot return any submitted photographs).

I want to become a kidscorp

i hope i become a reporter

I would love to become a Kid Repoter because I am excellent at interviewing and covering news and gossip. At my school, I do the daily announcements on the loud speaker. I have been doing this for about two years now.

can't i just send an email

Hi Jennifer,

No, unfortunately you can't apply through email. But I hope you apply by following the instructions listed in this post!

Thanks!

Do we have to write an essay about the two ideas?

Does the two ideas have to be wrriten into an essay?

Please reply! :)

Hi Momoko,

Nope. You can just list them.

Thanks!

Thanks for your reply!

But if you already wrote them into an essay, is that okay too?

Thank you!

I know it's kind of late but I was just notified about the due date for Oct. 11. Now it says it has to be postmarked, I'm guessing that it means stamped by the post-office. Is it okay to turn in my application tommorow and will I still be able to be qualified? Please reply, and thank you.

Momoko — Yes, if you've already written them into an essay that's totally OK.

Julia — Yes, you can turn your application in tomorrow.

Thanks!

Also I don't have Adobe Writer meaning I don't have the ability to type my own words in the application and save it in my document. I'll write this and clip it to the application so the editors are aware why it isn't typed. Is that okay? Also just another question: In the About Me section, are their any certain things you guys are looking for? Such as about their favorite subjects, where they live, and so on? Thank You, Julia

Hi Julia,

No problem on not having Adobe Writer. You can also type your answers using Microsoft Word and attach them to your application that way.

As for the About Me section, put whatever you want us to know about you. That's the section you get to tell us, well, all about you!

Thank you, this helped a lot

Dear Kid Reporter Editor,

I have just heard of this "Scholastic Kids Press Corps" and I have never heard a better idea! Since they cut the school newspaper out of my school I haven't been able to write for anybody. I am just finishing up the application. I do hope I'm sending it in before they have decided. Will they still even think about me if I send it in on October 10th?

Do you miss a lot of school as a kid reporter? How much time do you spend on the job? If you get picked, where do you meet? Is there like a convention.

Will you miss a lot of school working for Scholastic?

Do any kid reporters travel overseas?

How long do kid reporters usually have to finish a peiece?

Thanks so much for the questions everyone! I'm going to respond to all of them here:

Jerry: Yes. As long as your application is postmarked by October 11, we will consider it. Glad you're excited about the program!

Jamie: School is always the number one priority for the Kid Reporters. When we assign stories, we try our hardest to work around school schedules so Kid Reporters don't miss a lot of school. But sometimes it's necessary to miss school for an assignment. But, again, we make sure we keep how much school you miss to a minimum. As far as how much time you spend reporting, that depends from Kid Reporter to Kid Reporter. And if you're selected, you'll communicate with editors via email. The Kid Reporters never all meet up... but a convention sounds like a fun idea!

Lauren: See the answer to Jamie's question above.

Peter: No, Kid Reporters do not travel overseas.

Braden: It depends on the assignment. If it's a news story, Kid Reporters have to turn their stories in pretty quickly. But for other things, like book reviews, Kid Reporters have a little more time to work on their assignments. It really depends on the story.

Hope those answers helped! I'm looking forward to reading all of your applications!

I think there should be some kind of gathering or something. Maybe it could be a video confrence kinda thing but it would be cool to get to know evryone.
