Below the Surface
If the reaction at schools to Microsoft’s original Surface Pro and RT tablets was the equivalent of a loud yawn, the second generation will soon be here and they are worthy of your attention. Both the revamped Surface 2 (which replaces the RT model) and the Surface Pro 2 are much improved and have a big bonus: they include 200GB of online storage space with Microsoft’s SkyDrive online service for two years, perfect for stashing all those term papers and homework assignments.
- First off, look for higher performance with the Surface Pro 2. It will have an Intel Haswell Core i5 processor, 4- or 8GB of RAM and anywhere from 64- to 512GB of storage space. The system has a 10.6-inch HD screen, will use Microsoft’s Windows 8.1and have longer battery life than the original Pro. It will also have the original’s kickstand but this model can be set to viewing different angles. The system starts at $900
- The Surface 2 replaces the much maligned Surface RT and continues its emphasis on simplicity with Windows RT software and the Office suite. Its 10.6-inch screen can show 1,920 by 1,080 resolution, it comes with 2GB of RAM and can be set up with a 1.7GHz Tegra quad-core processor. Its price starts at $450.
